What's New For the 2021 Mazda CX-9?

Few three-row SUVs are as fun to drive as the CX-9, which adheres to its manufacturer, Mazda's sporty-driving philosophy. For 2021-which finds the CX-9 in its second production cycle-Mazda introduces a new standard 10.25-inch center display for the midsize crossover's Mazda Connect infotainment system. Also brand-new is the bold-styled Carbon Edition trim level.

2021 CX-9 Has Abundant Features

The 2021 CX-9 is split into five trim levels: Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and Signature. The three rows can hold up to seven people, although the second-row bench-style seat is swapped with a pair of captain's chairs on the Carbon Edition and Signature. You have the choice between a six- and a seven-seater on the Touring and Grand Touring.

The Mazda Connect system integrates components such as six-speaker AM/FM stereo system, HD Radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports and an audio jack, hands-free text messaging, voice recognition, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Also standard are driver-seat power, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front-seat heating, three-zone automatic climate control, and remote keyless entry with push-button engine start.

On the Touring, expect front-passenger-seat power, front-seat and second-row leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, and a power liftgate. The Carbon Edition comes with driver-seat memory, second-row heating, front-seat cooling, steering-wheel heating, frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, a navigation system, three months of SiriusXM Radio, and a power moonroof, and it has unique red leather-trimmed front-seat and second-row seats. The Grand Touring introduces dual second- and third-row USB ports, wireless phone charging, a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system, and three years of SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. The Signature has unique Nappa leather seats and steering-wheel contrast stitching.

A Perfect Blend of Power and Fuel Efficiency

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 227 horsepower for quick acceleration. The engine does output up to 250 horsepower if you use premium fuel instead of regular gas. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that includes manual-shift and Sport modes for exciting operation. Paddle shifters are added at the Carbon Edition trim level. Peak fuel economy is rated at 22/28 mpg, with the ability to upgrade to all-wheel drive for better performance on slippery surfaces.

Mazda CX-9 Safety at the Forefront

Driver assistance at the base level is on the robust side, with technologies such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, pre-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. There's also a rearview camera for monitoring what's behind you when driving in reverse. Dual front impact, side-impact, and side curtain airbags are present for restraint and cushioning during a crash. Reverse automatic braking, front braking sensors, and driver attention assist are gained at the Carbon Edition trim level. A 360-degree camera replaces the rearview one on the Grand Touring and Signature models.
