What's New For the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata?

The significant changes for this model came last year. The rearview camera was added, the engine was updated with more power and with a higher redline, and the steering wheel was redesigned and became fully telescopic. Also, the package options expanded, including a 30th-anniversary edition for the Grand Touring model. For 2020, the i-Activesense safety suite is now included across the trim lineup. Smartphone app integration is now standard on the higher trims.

Which Features are Available for 2020?

The 2020 MX-5 Miata is a convertible available with the buyer's choice of hardtop or softer top, and it comes in three trims. These are the Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. The Sport rides in 16-inch alloy wheels, and the standard convertible top is manually retractable. Tech features include a 7-inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth, voice controls, cruise control, and a six-speaker stereo with HD radio. This trim also has two USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack. All trims have a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Club trim has 17-inch wheels and comes with LED daytime running lights. The front fascia has a sportier design, and there's a rear lip spoiler. On the inside, the trim panels are upgraded, the seats are heated, and there's a nine-speaker Bose audio system. The Grand Touring has adaptive headlights and automatic high beam control, an auto-dimming driver-side exterior mirror, heated exterior mirrors, automatic wipers, a cloth-lined top, and leather upholstery. A special package is available that includes Recaro sport seats, but this package is available only on certain combinations of trim and transmission.

Great Power and Fuel Economy

2020 Mazda MX-5 MiataLast year's 2.0L four-cylinder engine produced 181 horsepower, but this year's engine gets a minor power boost to nearly 200 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels via the buyer's choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The latter comes with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The Grand Touring has a sport-tuned suspension and sound-enhancer option available via the purchase of the new GT-S package. The mid-level Club trim gets the sport-tuned suspension if the manual transmission is chosen, and the manual transmission version also comes with a limited-slip differential and Bilstein shock absorbers.

This is a vehicle that's quite simply fun to drive. Although horsepower is minimal, the car handles like any other sport machine. Acceleration is quick, thanks to the 7,500 rpm redline. Handling and steering are precise, what one would expect in a high-quality roadster.

2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Safety Features

2020 Mazda MX-5 MiataThe i-Activesense safety suite is now standard on all three trims. This suite includes low-speed forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. This is the first model year with a standard rearview camera. Other safety features include dual front airbags, stability and traction control, and a pre-collision safety system.
