Knowing how to change a spare tire is an essential part of car maintenance, and with a little prep, anyone can learn how. Spare tires aren’t designed to be driven on for long, but they will keep you going until you can visit our Mazda service center. If you get a flat tire, just follow these steps to get back on the road.
Getting Ready to Change
When you notice a blowout, don’t slam on the brakes — slow down and look for a place to pull off on the side of the road. When you find an open spot or a wide shoulder, pull to the side, engage the parking brake, and turn on your hazard signals. Apply wheel wedges in front of the opposite axle from the flat, remove the hubcap, and you’re ready to change.
Changing a Tire
Loosen the lug nuts with a lug wrench, then place the jack under a metal spot on your vehicle’s frame, there is a specific spot designed for the jack*. Raise the jack and finish removing the lug nuts, then remove the flat tire.
Now it’s time to mount your new tire. Put your spare on the lug bolts and tighten the lug nuts with your fingers as much as you can — you’ll finish attaching the wheels when the car is on the ground.
Lowering the Vehicle
Lower the vehicle most of the way so that part of the vehicle’s weight is resting on the ground. Tighten the lug nuts all the way with the lug wrench, then let the car all the way down. Double-check that your lug nuts are tightened all the way and you’re ready to drive on your spare.
