What's New for the 2019 Mazda MX-5?

The MX-5 has always had a reputation for being a fun, fast, and nimble car to drive, but this year the beloved coupe has even more to offer drivers with a more powerful engine, leather-trimmed seats, and more upscale interior touches than before. This year's MX-5 comes in two trim levels, and each offers more in the way of standard amenities than past model years.

Some features you can look forward to in the 2019 edition are 17-inch wheels, heated leather seats, and an automatic braking system designed for city driving. These features, along with premier shock absorbers, ensure you have a smooth, cushioned ride wherever you go in the MX-5. With seven exterior colors and four interior colors to choose from, there is a world of opportunity for creating a customized ride that you can distinguish as your own.

2019 MX-5 Trims & Features that Impress

This year, there are two trim levels in the MX-5. The base model is called the "Club." This trim level features standard 17-inch black alloy wheels with a metallic tint. Also standard on this trim level are special Bilstein shock absorbers, which take in all the impact of bumps, grooves, and uneven road edges so that you don't feel anything. The Club comes in a hardtop design, but it has an innovative retractable roof that lets you drop the top in less than 15 seconds. Black accents around the exterior, including around the perimeter of the drop top, in the front air dam, and in the back spoiler, give the Club a distinct look. On rainy or cold days, the built-in defogger on the rear windshield is a convenient feature.

Power-operated windows, automatic air conditioning, and a remote start capacity are also standard on the Club. Like many 2019 models, the MX-5 comes with an infotainment-entertainment system. The base models sports a seven-inch color display screen with a voice-activated multi-function command center. This trim takes sound seriously, as evidenced by the addition of speakers in the front seat headrests and a subwoofer in the back. Heated, leather seats and leather accents in the interior add to the luxurious feel.

Standard safety features in the Club include rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. The Grand Touring adds satellite and internet-connected radio to the infotainment system. It also has SMS text message receipt and delivery, and it comes with a standard nine-speaker Bose sound system. Safety and convenience come in the form of rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming mirror on the driver's side, and heated outside mirrors. Traffic sign recognition and high beam control are standard safety features that this trim adds to the list of standard amenities.

How Much Power is the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Packing?

The engine features an electronically-controlled fuel injection system, and it runs on standard gasoline. In either trim level, you can choose between either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Rear-wheel drive is the standard drivetrain in both models.

Innovative Safety Features

The MX-5 comes with a number of innovative standard and optional safety features. Standard safety amenities in this coupe include adaptive front lighting, which makes the lights turn in the direction of your intended path of travel, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear park assist. Optional amenities to make your MX-5 even safer include high beam control, city brake support, which helps you stop quickly if there are pedestrians, bicycles, or objects in your path, and traffic sign recognition.
