If you're searching for a compact SUV that's spacious, comfortable, and fun to drive, you can't go wrong with the 2026 Mazda CX-5 S or S Select. This year's model has been almost completely redesigned to provide more interior space and an increased cargo capacity while still retaining many of the elements that have made the CX-5 one of the most beloved options in its category.
Performance
In terms of performance, there is nothing that sets the two trim levels apart. Both feature Mazda's Skyactiv-G 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder engine that boasts 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission to provide excellent handling and response. The i-Active AWD drivetrain and Mi-Drive Sport and Off-Road driving modes also ensure you can tackle various terrains and conditions with ease.
Appearance
The S and S Select feature many of the distinctive design elements Mazda is known for, giving them a more premium look and feel compared to most other crossovers. Both models have matte black bumpers, wheel arches, and rocker moldings, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a gray metallic finish, and a body color rear roof spoiler, all of which contribute to their sleek, sporty appearance. The main difference between the two in terms of appearance is that the S Select has a privacy glass rear window and more available color options.
The interior is another area where the CX-5 stands out. Both models feature a handsome leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector. The S Select also gets an upgrade with leatherette-trimmed seats.
Features
As the more premium model, the S Select has some additional features you can't get with the S model. Both models come with the Mazda Connect infotainment system and a 12.25-inch touchscreen center display, along with Google built-in, dual front USB audio inputs, and steering-mounted controls for audio, phone, and cruise control. The S has standard plug-in compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the S Select boasts wireless compatibility as well as a wireless phone charger.
Other features you can find on both vehicles include remote start, dual-zone automatic control with pollen filter, remote keyless entry, and a 12-volt power outlet. With the S Select, you also get dual-illuminated visor mirrors and rear seat air vents. Some of the safety and driver-assistance features that come standard include lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind spot assist, and automatic emergency braking.
