If an automaker has one vehicle that earns a top safety rating in a year, that is something to celebrate, but Mazda has earned eight! With that number of awards, Mazda has earned more Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ratings in 2024 than any other automaker. While it has several standout models that have earned the prestigious safety recognition, the Mazda CX-70 and the CX-70 Plug-in Hybrid are models that specifically earned the highest safety award possible.
Mazda Models That Earned the 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award
In addition to the CX-70 and the CX-70 Plug-in Hybrid, several other Mazda models received the desirable IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award for 2024. That includes the Mazda3 in both the sedan and hatchback version, the Mazda CX-30, and the Mazda CX-90 and plug-in hybrid version of the same car called the Mazda CX-90 PHEV.
IIHS Top Safety Pick Qualifications
Qualifying for the honor of an IIHS top safety pick, regardless of vehicle model, is no small feat. Cars that meet the IIHS criteria to win an award must excel in several key safety categories. That includes having scores of "Acceptable" or "Good," as rated by the IIHS, in small and moderate front overlap crashes. Additionally, vehicles must have a score of "Good" when rated in side-impact collisions. In any model evaluated, all trim levels must have headlights that receive a score of "Acceptable" or "Good" as well.
Standout Mazda Safety Technology
Mazda has equipped its vehicles with several proprietary safety aids that help drivers and has also helped its vehicles receive safety awards. One is I-Activsense, which uses cameras and radar technology to help drivers remain aware of their surroundings. This technology helps drivers avoid potential collisions and hazards on the road. In the unfortunate event when an accident happens, this technology works to mitigate damage to the car and injuries to the driver and passengers.
Pre-Collision Safety Avoidance
Mazda’s award-winning vehicles are also outfitted with leading safety technology that helps to lessen the severity of a collision in the event that an accident is unavoidable. Additionally, Mazda’s award-winning vehicles are built with a special rigid body structure that absorbs the impact of collisions when they do occur. This technology also includes a seat belt pre-tensioner and load limit protection mechanism, along with an advanced airbag system.
Furthermore, Mazda uses Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to help reduce the risk of accidents and damage to both the vehicle and its occupants.
