Mazda Rotary Engine History

The whole idea of the Mazda Rotary began in the 1960s when the Japanese government decided to restructure the national auto industry. The president of Mazda at the time, Tsuneji Matsuda, had to sign the agreement with the German firm NSU to come up with the rotary engine.

In 1970, the U.S. federal government introduced the Clean Air Act was amended, aiming to reduce the amount of hydrocarbon emitting from the exhaust. The Mazda engineers revisited the engineering to improve the efficiency of the engine. By 1973 Mazda had come up with an engine that passed the Muskie Act test. The Updated Familia Rotary Coupe was certified in Japan due to its low pollution effect.
In 1974, the Phoenix Project was initiated to develop a highly efficient engine. One engineer came up with a way to recycle the heat generated by the thermal reactor, something that improved the car fuel consumption due to the improved rotary engine.
Mazda launched the RX-7 sports car that used high technology in 1978. The vehicle entered the race, and it was praised due to its capabilities and innovation. Since then, the RX-7 competed in various races and attained victories. Due to economic issues, production was suspended in 2002 until 2003.
The RENESIS engine was introduced to the market by the Mazda Rotary Research Department in 2003. The rotary was presented on the RX-8 sports car, which was officially released in 2006. Over the recent, there has been rumbling about the rotary update on the rotary engine.
