A Look Back: The Mazda MX-5 Miata Celebrates 30-Years!

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the 2019 MX-5 Miata offers a great combination of heritage styling and next-generation technology. This sporty roadster runs on the patented SKYACTIV platform that's engineered for superb performance. Designed to take two adults for an awesome ride, this convertible car promises to deliver an exciting driving experience.

Signature Features in the Updated 2019 MX-5 Miata

The SKYACTIV-G powertrain is the main driving force of the 2019 MX-5 Miata. Using an electronically controlled fuel injection system, this 2.0 L engine block generates just more than 180 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. A rear-wheel drive is another notable mechanical system that propels this stylish Mazda roadster. This classic driveline configuration receives torque from the SKYACTIV-MT transmission system. A short-throw shifter controls the mechanics of this manual transmission system that has six fixed gear ratios. You can also get the 6AT transmission for clutch-free driving.

Having a curb weight of less than 2,400 pounds, the MX-5 Miata experiences little aerodynamic drag. Such a low weight also contributes to swift acceleration and smooth cornering on any paved surface. A 53/47 weight distribution is optimized for a balanced drive at fast speeds. Aluminum bearings with monotube dampers reduce vibrations in the rear suspension system. A double-wishbone assembly bolsters the front suspension system. This agile Mazda car also has a double pinion in the electric power steering system.

When you get the optional GT-S Package for the MX-5 Miata, you'll have access to class-exclusive mechanical amenities. A limited-slip differential is part of this high-performance package. The Bilstein dampers minimize high-magnitude vibrations from rough roads. A tower brace further reinforces the lightweight chassis of this two-door model.

The patented i-ACTIVSENSE technology highlights the tremendous evolution that the MX-5 Miata has made in the active safety category. When you exceed 44 MPH, the Lane Departure Warning is ready to react to potential side crashes on the highway. Using high-mounted cameras to read road signs, the Traffic Sign Recognition technology issues alerts in the car's 4.6-inch LCD instrument cluster. For example, you'll be warned by the TSR if you run past a stop sign or drive faster than the speed limit. The Smart City Brake Support makes this Mazda roadster less vulnerable to accidents in urban traffic.

The 2019 MX-5 Miata has other driving aides, such as the Adaptive Front Lighting, which can tilt the headlamps by up to 15 degrees in response to the steering direction. When another car in an opposing lane approaches you, the High Beam Control changes the headlights setting from high to low. Blinking alerts in the side mirrors might be generated by the Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which analyzes the risk of a lateral collision. Flashing warnings in the side mirrors also appear when the Blind Spot Monitoring identifies another moving car in your blind spot.

When you hop inside Miata MX-5’s cockpit, you can entertain yourself and a companion with music on Aha, Pandora or Stitcher Radio. Even when the roof is fully retracted, the premium Bose sound system brings clear acoustics to your ears. Several speakers are installed in the headrests to optimize the audio quality during a high-speed drive. The nine speakers and a subwoofer are powered by the AudioPilot technology.
