Incredible Advancements in Safety Features
Modern advancements in technology are allowing auto manufacturers to create incredibly sophisticated driver safety systems. At one point in time, airbags and anti-lock brakes were the industry standard for safety. In retrospect, that technology seems positively rudimentary when compared to the incredible advances in active and passive safety systems found in cars today. The Mazda6 is well known for its distinctive and elegant styling, but it is also highly regarded as an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
Mazda calls its suite of safety systems “i-Activesense”. This includes a blind spot monitoring system as well as a rear cross-traffic alert. Front airbag systems of the past are now more technologically advanced, and the Mazda6 comes equipped with advanced front airbags with passenger-weigh sensors as well as front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side-impact curtains. These airbags have been lengthened and the deployment timing for all airbags was reprogrammed to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes.
The Mazda6 features advanced technology to help you see better and avoid collisions. High Beam Control is a feature that maximizes the use of the high beam headlamps at night. The system automatically switches to low beams when it detects oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead. The adaptive front-lighting system pivots the headlights in the direction of your turn, improving visibility and allowing you to spot potential hazards.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert is Mazda’s detection system for cars that are approaching from the side when backing up. The system promptly alerts the driver with an audible and visual warning either in the side mirror or rearview camera display. And the side mirrors also relay the alerts for the Blind Spot Monitoring system. Similar to the Cross Traffic Alert, the Blind Spot Monitoring system functions when the car is moving forward, detecting objects in your blind spot.
Advanced Smart City Brake Support helps detect vehicles and pedestrians in the path of the car. If an impact is predicted, the system will warn the driver and also apply the brakes, if necessary. The Mazda6 also features an advanced radar-based adaptive cruise control system. This system maintains a set speed and minimum following distance (which is programmable) from the traffic ahead. With Stop & Go technology, the Mazda6 will automatically reduce the speed if the car in front reduces its speed, or even stop if the vehicle ahead stops.
