Car Not Accelerating

As a car owner, you learn to recognize how your car drives and performs. Therefore, it's easy to notice if something in your car is off. One problem that your vehicle may encounter is trouble accelerating. You may notice that there seems to be a delay when you step on the gas, and you may find that the car doesn't seem to pick up speed as quickly as it did before. Even if you don't think the problem is a major issue, a mechanic will need to look at your car to correct the problem, which may include a problem with a sensor or valve before it becomes worse or causes additional problems.

Dirty Oxygen Sensor or Mass Air Flow Sensor

The engine in your car is complex and made up of multiple parts. If the car is having trouble accelerating, one of two sensors that regulate airflow to the engine may be blamed. One sensor that might cause trouble is the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor ensures that there is sufficient oxygen in the air that enters the car's engine. Another sensor that can cause your car problems is the mass airflow sensor. This sensor is designed to ensure that your car's engine has enough oxygen. The mass airflow sensor and oxygen sensor can break or get too dirty, which means they can't allow proper fuel mixture to occur.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle position sensor, or TPS, is another component that can cause acceleration problems in your vehicle. This sensor controls the amount of fuel in the vehicle's engine by monitoring the opening position in the throttle valve. The TPS is subject to getting dirty or wearing out over time. If the TPS starts to malfunction, it can't direct fuel into the engine, which can leave you with a car that does not respond quickly when you press the accelerator. Other performance aspects of the engine may be compromised as well if there are issues with the TPS.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is an essential part of the engine. The fuel filter works typically well to keep pollen, dust, and dirt out of the engine. However, it can't filter out particles if it gets too dirty. In that case, a mechanic may need to install a new filter.

Dirty Air Filter

The air filter generally removes contaminants from the air so that they don't cause problems with the engine. If the air filter is not cleaned regularly or replaced, sludge and grime can accumulate in the engine and create problems.
