The all-new 2023 Mazda3 has achieved the highest rating in the new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) side impact test. The Mazda3 is one of only two small cars to reach the top rating in the new test. It is designed to replicate how vehicles perform in a side collision with a large SUV or pickup truck.

Huge Announcement From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced on November 10 that the 2023 Mazda3 Hatchback and 2023 Mazda3 Sedan performed the highest. They were the only vehicles out of 11 small cars to get a good rating in the side crash test.
The test simulated a 20-mph side crash by using a moving deformable barrier to strike the side of the vehicle.
The updated side crash test is more severe than the previous version. It is designed to replicate crashes that are more likely to occur on the road. A good rating in the updated test means a vehicle must withstand a collision with a barrier traveling at 32 mph. It is compared to the previous test version, which used a barrier traveling only 23 mph.
Other small SUVs, including the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape, earned only "Acceptable" ratings in the test.
