Mazda key fob batteries generally last a long time, but they don't last forever. You can get these batteries replaced at our dealer of course, but it's also something that you can do yourself if you so choose. The first step is to determine how well it's working.

Getting Started

If you turn your engine off while the car is on, and the KEY warning light on your dashboard goes off, that certainly means the fob battery is in trouble. Obviously, if the light on your fob isn't working or if you can't see the light come on, that's another sign. You may have a waning battery if the range on it is reduced as well.

First, you have to gather just a few things. This includes the fob itself, a replacement battery, and a flathead screwdriver that you've wrapped up with tape.

Changing the Battery

To start, you will need to remove the auxiliary key by pushing down the knob on the back of the fob. Once you've removed it, you'll need your screwdriver. Push it into the opening on the fob and twist the opposite end of the opening to loosen the cover.

Next, flip the key over and there should be an opening there now. Put the screwdriver in there and slide it down until you can get the cover off.

Now you can take off the battery cap. It's the round thing you see there. Take out the old battery. Keep the ring if it falls off. Make sure you put it back on before you add the new battery. In order to put in the replacement battery, have its positive side facing the top of the fob, and then put it in. Now you can put the battery cap back in as well as the key fob cover, and snap it all into place.

Finally, you can reinsert your auxiliary key and you're done.
