2018 Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 on Car and Drivers 10 Best Trucks & SUVs List

Mazda CX-5 and CX-9

Of the ten spots available on the Car and Driver Best Trucks and SUVs List, Mazda has earned two. This is in addition to one spot for the Miata on the Best Cars List. In the three decades that the magazine has rated the top vehicles in the country, Mazda is one of the three brands with the most wins.

To make the list, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 was up against other big names in the compact crossover category. The 2018 Mazda CX-9 earned its second appearance on the list as the Best Mid-Size SUV. Judges were looking for design and craftsmanship, but they were also looking for performance and exemplary chassis dynamics. The two Mazda vehicles stood out in all of these categories as well as in fuel efficiency and overall refinement.

Editors applauded the CX-5 for a category-defying eagerness that was evident from the first turn of the wheel. The crossover’s chassis provides the type of body control every driver yearns for. On the one hand, it is engaging with a firm enough response to please the driver. On the other, it doesn’t let pavement imperfections destroy its ride quality. The CX-9 was praised for bringing satisfaction and sophistication to everyday driving. The SUV balances its utilitarian nature with driving enjoyment. Judges called it a benchmark for other big SUVs.

While judges considered vehicles that cost up to $80,000, these two Mazda vehicles are significantly more affordable. The CX-5 starts below $25,000, and the CX-9 starts at about $32,000. Their budget-friendly price tags and value-rich packages also prompted judges to honor them. For instance, both vehicles include a rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitor on their standard editions. The CX-9 includes auto-leveling headlights to more accurately illuminate the road.

The CX-5 has one of the most spacious cabins in its class. Legroom for backseat passengers is rated at 39 inches. Upgrades for 2018 have made the CX-5 an even better value. Standard cylinder deactivation has been added, reducing fuel use on the highway. Gas mileage is rated at 31 mpg highway. CX-5 engines generate 187 horsepower and 186 lb.ft. of torque. These figures beat those of rivals such as the Nissan Rogue and Dodge Journey. More ACTIVSENSE features are available to reduce the chances of a collision.

CX-9 upgrades sought to make the cabin more accessible and the ride quieter. The second row has easy-to-use levers and a longer slide track to permit access to the third row. Engineers focused on noise reduction, raising the premium IQ of the cabin. The turbo of the CX-9 earns 28 mpg highway. The competitive engine kicks out 250 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft.
