The award-winning 2017 Mazda CX-9 has yet another impressive achievement to add its mantel: Top Safety Pick+.* Awarded by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), this is the highest safety score available from the organization.

“The concepts of ‘self’ and ‘family,’ as well as ‘smart indulgence’ led the way for our engineers and designers to create their ideal midsize crossover SUV,” said Masashi Otsuka, VP of R&D and design, Mazda North American Operations. “We are proud to say that the IIHS has recognized CX-9 for its safety, highlighting the achievements of our engineering team.”

A Top Safety Pick+ designation means that a vehicle excels in numerous areas of safety, starting with crashworthiness. Vehicles must earn top ratings in five different crash tests—small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. Thanks to safety features like advanced dual front airbags, side-curtain airbags with roll over protection and side-impact door beams, the Mazda CX-9 was able to prove its tenacity across a variety of collision scenarios.

On top of the crashworthiness tests, a vehicle must also pass stringent tests for both the headlights and front crash prevention technology. The Mazda CX-9 not only met the IIHS’s requirements in both categories, but also earned the top “Superior” rating for its optional Smart City Brake Support.
